The value of communication in the workplace

I recently began to work as head of operations for a EdTech startup, The Garage School and I must say that in the past weeks, I have learnt a lot. One important thing to share is communication in the workplace.

Non-verbal forms of communication in the workplace (tone, looking at the speaker to show you are listening, firm handshakes to show assurance and confidence and speaking while assuming the confidence pose) will help you achieve more out of your work colleagues, staff, employer and partners in business.

Often, not communicating effectively causes strife and stifling work environments, built up resentment amongst team members and a lack of trust in the management.

Managers must learn to nudge those they manage in the right direction as this builds trust. They must also communicate displeasure in the right language and tone or they might break their spirits.

When stuck on a problem, don’t sound dismissive. Instead, seek their perspective and that might bring a new idea to the drawing board.

I will be sharing more lessons on my journey into building The Garage School.
